When Gösta Mittag-Leffler wrote to nominate her for the Nobel Prize in 1925, he was informed she had been dead for four years. The Nobel is not awarded posthumously. The maha-pralaya, the great dissolution at the end of Brahma’s 100-year lifespan (311 trillion years), envisions a cosmos that does not die once but dies and is reborn in an eternal oscillation—the fifth scenario.
The Nasadiya Sukta (Rigveda 10.129)—perhaps the most intellectually audacious hymn ever composed—asks: “Who really knows? Who will here proclaim it? Whence was it produced? Whence is this creation?” This is not devotional poetry. This is epistemic humility at a cosmological scale. The Vedic rishis did not claim certainty about origins. They held multiple cosmogonic hypotheses simultaneously—precisely what Mack does with her five endings. The structural parallel is not coincidental. It is diagnostic.
The Bhagavata Purana speaks of innumerable universes, each covered by sevenfold layers, all clustering like atoms—a description that resonates, if I may err on the side of astonishment, with the multiverse hypothesis now under serious theoretical investigation. The Jain concept of Pudgala—matter as indestructible, merely transforming through cosmic cycles—prefigures the conservation laws that underpin every ending Mack describes. And Zoroastrian Frashokereti—the purification of the world, the final purification that destroys corruption but renews creation—carries the same structural DNA as the cosmological Bounce: not annihilation, but transfiguration.
These are not mere analogies. They are evidence that human consciousness, across civilizations and millennia, has independently arrived at the same structural intuition: the cosmos operates in cycles of creation, governance, dissolution, and renewal. The methodology differs. The architecture converges.
E. The Realization
Mack’s book does not conclude with despair. It concludes—and this is the revelation I want to leave you with—with the proposition that knowing the ending changes the quality of the present. Not its duration. Its quality.
We are carbon assembled from the ash of dead stars, briefly conscious, temporarily organized against entropy, reading about our own dissolution on a planet orbiting a middle-aged star in one galaxy among two trillion. And yet—we ask. We compute. We compose hymns. We build telescopes that see 13.8 billion years into the past and frameworks that govern the future.
Is that not the most improbable, the most preposterous, the most magnificent defiance of entropy the universe has ever produced?
The cosmos will end. That is certain. How it ends is not. But what we do with the interval—the interval between the Big Bang and whichever finale awaits—that is the only variable we govern. And governance, as always, is the difference between entropy and architecture.
