Before we know what values are, we inhabit them. Childhood receives its deepest lessons without footnotes. A threshold, a field, a harvest room, a grandmother’s decision — each can become a philosophy long before we understand that philosophy is being taught.

My childhood floor was made of two places nine miles apart: Amravati, where my father was a professor, and Naya Akola, where our ancestral home and farmland stood. We returned for Diwali, Dashera, harvests, rituals, and school holidays. Amravati held books and town life. Naya Akola held black cotton soil, cattle, mango trees, seed work, and the memory of a joint agricultural family.

I thought every child moved between such worlds. Only much later did I recognize that I had been absorbing an operating system.

1. Two Geographies, One Inner Map

The fields around Naya Akola were not scenery. They were decision environments. My uncle managed cotton, tur, chana, jowar, bajra, til, and wheat according to soil, rainfall, irrigation, and the uncertainty of the monsoon. No one called this diversification. Yet that is what it was: no single crop carried the entire burden of survival.

The mango orchard taught a different logic. A tree planted today might need years before serious bearing, then produce for decades. The planter was making decisions for people not yet grown. Agriculture made intergenerational time visible.

Human geography is often described through settlement, land use, and economic activity. Lived geography goes deeper. Place trains intuition about uncertainty, patience, scarcity, and obligation. The map outside eventually becomes a map inside.

2. The Seed-Grower’s Instinct

In the early 1970s, our farms grew okra seed for the National Seeds Corporation. As a child, I did not understand certification protocols. I understood seriousness. I remember rooms and rooftops filled with dried okra pods and elders speaking carefully about the work.

Only later could I name what was embedded in that atmosphere: traceability, isolation, purity, inspection, germination, downstream consequence. The integrity of a small seed lot could affect an entire chain beyond the farm. What looked local was not local at all.

That logic has remained with me. In medicine, governance, artificial intelligence, hospitality, and the frameworks I build, I return to similar questions: What entered the system? Can we trace it? What must remain uncontaminated? Where does a small defect become a large downstream failure?

I once thought this instinct came from professional training. Some of it began in those rooms of drying pods.

3. The Gaywada at the Threshold

Our ancestral home opened through the gaywada, the cattle enclosure. On arriving from Amravati, the sequence was stable: the pile of cow dung outside, then the cattle, then the courtyard, then my grandmother, before whom we offered pranam. The architecture organized the ritual of return.

To a child, cow dung was simply part of the landscape. To the farm, it was fertility, fuel, compost, and part of a circular system. Fodder nourished cattle; cattle produced milk and dung; dung returned fertility to the soil; the soil produced the next season’s fodder.

The placement of the gaywada at the threshold communicated hierarchy. Before entering the human center of the household, one passed through the animal system that sustained it. In a Gandhian-influenced family, this carried moral as well as economic weight.

I did not know I was passing through a cosmology. I thought I was going to my grandmother’s house.

4. My Grandmother’s Structural Redirection

My father, the eldest son, returned to manage the farms after graduation in the 1960s. A Gandhian and socialist, he raised the wages of farm workers. The decision caused repercussions because local economics, labor, caste, class, and custom were tightly connected.

My grandmother understood the danger. A widow responsible for preserving the family land, she did not attack his principles or ask him to abandon them. She changed the field. She urged him to pursue his master’s degree at Fergusson College in Pune.

That move protected the farm without humiliating the son. It preserved his conviction by relocating where it could operate. He went on to a scholarly life and decades of writing. Looking back, I recognize a form of strategic intelligence I have repeatedly used myself: when direct confrontation will damage both actor and system, redesign the situation.

5. What We Inherit Before We Choose

I did not become a farmer. I became a physician, entrepreneur, and builder of systems. I live far from Naya Akola. Yet the structure of that childhood keeps reappearing in my work: the seed grower’s insistence on traceability; mixed cropping as distributed risk; the orchard’s patience with long-cycle value; the gaywada’s lesson that foundations should be acknowledged first; and my grandmother’s ability to preserve values by changing the field rather than breaking the person.

Inheritance is therefore more than property, surname, or family story. We inherit decision patterns. We inherit thresholds. We inherit what adults treated as sacred, negotiable, wasteful, or worth protecting. Much of this is installed before conscious memory becomes analytical memory.

That is why memoir belongs inside human geography. Geography is not only where people lived. It is how place entered them.

The people who created my childhood world are mostly gone, and the physical world itself is changing. Fields are sold, orchards age, villages modernize, and joint families disperse. But disappearance of the visible structure does not mean disappearance of its influence.

I can still feel that floor when I work, write, diagnose, design, or refuse to compromise on something whose origin I cannot immediately explain. The lesson is not that the past was perfect. It is that the past is active. It continues to make decisions through us until we learn to see it.

My father taught me that the deepest values are held quietly. They are present without being announced. They are the floor, not the flag.

Perhaps that is the responsibility of inheritance: not to worship the floor, but to know what we are standing on before we decide where to build next.
